The start of the 2015-16 Premier League season has exceeded Joe Gomez’s expectations while serving as a well-received reality check for Alberto Moreno.
Moreno, 23, is older, more experienced and more familiar with life at Liverpool than Gomez, 18, but he trails his teenage teammate in the competition for the job as Liverpool’s starting left back. Gomez played all 90 minutes in Liverpool’s wins over Stoke City and Bournemouth. Moreno has played just 10 minutes (as a substitute against Bournemouth) so far this season.
Gomez and Moreno both are aware Brendan Rodgers could change the left-back pecking order over the course of the season. Gomez’s rapid ascent at Liverpool still surprises him, but he’s working hard to retain his place in the starting lineup.
