Asier Illarramendi’s move to Real Madrid couldn’t really have worked out any worse for the player.
Signed from Real Sociedad for €32.2m in July 2013, the 25-year-old has barely made an impression at the Santiago Bernabeu in the two years since.
Once Toni Kroos was bought after an excellent 2014 World Cup, the writing was on the wall. Only significant injury to the German would keep him out of the side, so a move away has been at least a year in the making.
When Carlo Ancelotti was relived of his duties by Florentino Perez the defensive midfielder might’ve expected any new manager to wipe the slate clean and give each squad member an equal playing field, but Rafa Benitez has already let it be known that he will not count on Illarramendi for the new season.
